declawing of cats has become an out-dated, cruel and inhumane surgery. it has to end. it is out-lawed in most of europe, australia, japan, the UK...but not in canada or the usa. why are we so far behind the rest of the civilized world when it comes to animal cruelty? is our furniture more important than our pets quality of life? for those of you who say, 'it's not that bad, it doesn't bother them much' , here's the facts: declawing means cutting off every toe at the first knuckle, which also severs the tendons that are attached to the claw. the tendons will no longer be able to move, and this can lead to tendonitis. cats walk on their toes also, so declawing causes them to shift their weight to the back paws to avoid pain, which leads eventually to arthritis. litter box problems can happen if pain is not managed after surgery, because they won't want to dig in litter if their paws hurt. also, declawing is the number one most painful surgery. it can cause long term chronic pain, ghost pain...ever notice a declawed cat changes personality after surgery? becomes more 'mellow'. this may be because they are in pain. cats don't show pain, they hide it. here are symptoms of pain, as listed by the cat hospital of chicago website:

I was up til 2 a.m. reading failblog last night, the section LFMF (learn from my fail) ...and giggling hysterically (maybe cuz it was late, idk) Anyway, i thought of some things that have happened to me that fall under that category. Thought i'd share, so...LEARN FROM MY FAIL! The following incidents are all very true and really did happen!
   (this happened back in high school, long ago, lol) When getting on the school bus in the morning, if you perchance to see a wasp buzzing on the window where you sit, DON'T swat it with your homework, and then sit down without looking. You WILL sit on said wasp and dead wasps still sting. You WILL cause the bus driver to laugh at you and you WILL have to sit through class -on a hard wooden seat- with a burning, swollen butt cheek.
   During winter, always wear proper winter footwear. Worn out rubber boots are surprisingly slippery on bare ice. On the same note, if you have a favorite pair of rubber-soled house slippers that are worn out -throw them out- don't keep on wearing them until you fall flat on your back - on the wet stair.
   When trying to catch a feral cat that's been hanging around your yard, DO NOT corner it and grab it by the tail, no matter HOW thick those leather mitts are. It WILL bite right through them and leave a gash in your hand, and you WILL have to go to the clinic for a  tetanus shot.
   When arriving home in the dark from a fishing trip, if you have caught any walleye, DO NOT clean them outside in the dark to save cleaning up the kitchen. You won't be able to see what you are doing, and in the process of whipping your hand up and down the length of the fish with a spoon to descale it, you WILL lodge one of those long, sharp back spines into your finger. You WILL not realize this until days later, when you wonder why your finger is sore, and you can press on one side of your finger and see a lump on THE OTHER SIDE of same finger. After a week of showing this amazing trick to your husband, he WILL make you go to the emergency ward to get it surgically removed...and the doctor WILL laugh at you.

   When staying overnight where there is limited plumbing, make sure the porta-potty is closed at the bottom. It WILL leak when you go, and pee WILL run all over the floor, and drip through the floor boards down to the room below. You WILL be embarrassed.
   If you are a mom and your 2 toddlers are suddenly very very quiet, go check what they are doing. They are NOT playing nicely with their toys. They are , in fact, styling each other's hair with an entire large size tub of vaseline. Vaseline does NOT wash out easily.
